What is Product Design

Product design is mainly bringing together art, design and technology to create products that can be used practically. Such designers study human interaction with products surrounding them, understand materials and their handling, recognize a problem that can be solved by a product, create a prototype and develop a final product after testing.

What you learn in product design courses?

Product design education include topics such as drawing, design elements, history of art & visual culture, digital design basics, printmaking techniques, clay and ceramic ware making, sociology, creativity techniques, creative writing for designers, foundation painting, economics, communication, handicraft, sculpture, digital illustration techniques, materials and manufacturing processes, environmental studies, digital modeling and animation and so on.
Mathematics, physics for designers, law for designers, product ergonomics, mechanism design, product detailing, basic electronics for design, computer aided industrial design and rendering, design management etc. also come under product design topics.

What product design courses can you do?

You can get a product design degree by doing B.Des, BA, B.Sc and B.Voc. You can also go for product design Diploma and certificate courses. Product design masters programs include M.Des, MA, M.Sc and M.Voc. Some colleges offer BFA and MFA in this field as well.
You can study product design in B.Tech and M.Tech as well where the focus is more on the technical aspects of this field.

What product design jobs are there?

Product design work can be undertaken by being a product designer, packaging designer, and computer aided design technician. Product design career path can be carved in design departments of manufacturing firms, industries, consulting firms, ceramic design related industries, health care, etc.
